The building
The Barcelona Nord Bus Station building is the result of the restoration of the left wing of the former railway station, originally built in 1861. This intervention made it possible to recover a space that had significantly deteriorated over time due to its historic use as a freight loading and unloading depot, as well as the numerous alterations it had undergone over the years.
The original restoration returned the building to its essential architectural form, preserving its valuable heritage features while strengthening its structure, foundations, floors and roof to meet the regulatory and operational requirements of a modern bus station. Universal accessibility was also ensured through the removal of architectural barriers and the installation of lifts and other accessible facilities.
In 2026, a major refurbishment of the station was completed, aimed at modernising the facilities, improving passenger circulation and enhancing the overall user experience. The main transformation has been the consolidation of all passenger services onto a single level, centred around a spacious entrance hall of approximately 1,500 m², making movement through the station easier and improving passenger orientation. At the same time, a single public entrance and exit has been established from Carrer de Nàpols, enhancing security, passenger flow management and connections with the Arc de Triomf public transport network.
The refurbishment also included the complete renovation of the waiting areas, operator ticket offices, passenger information facilities and digital signage, with the installation of large real-time information displays showing departures, arrivals and platform allocations. The station now offers an accessible information point, new food and beverage outlets, vending services and retail spaces adapted to the needs of today's travellers.
The modernisation has been completed with the introduction of intelligent security and CCTV systems, improvements to lighting and indoor environmental quality, and the installation of photovoltaic panels on the roof to reduce the building's energy consumption and promote a more sustainable management model. Throughout the project, the heritage value of the former railway station has been carefully preserved while strengthening its role as Barcelona's main hub for national and international coach services.
This project forms part of Barcelona's Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destination, funded by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU programme.
Platforms
Barcelona Nord Bus Station has 47 operational coach bays, designed to ensure the efficient, safe and orderly operation of scheduled, private hire and tourist coach services. The layout of the bays and manoeuvring areas enables coaches to enter, park and depart smoothly while maintaining high safety standards.
The 2026 refurbishment reorganised passenger and vehicle circulation, improving wayfinding, real-time passenger information and accessibility between the coach bays and the terminal building. New digital displays, upgraded information systems and improved passenger flows provide a more efficient boarding and alighting experience.
The platforms feature spacious waiting areas, upgraded lighting, public address systems, CCTV and fully accessible routes, ensuring comfort and safety for passengers throughout their journey.
A sustainable station
Barcelona Nord Bus Station remains committed to environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.
Since 2014, the station has operated a ground-source geothermal heating and cooling system, using 32 boreholes to harness the stable underground temperature, significantly reducing energy consumption and the building's associated carbon emissions.
The 2026 refurbishment further enhanced this strategy through the installation of photovoltaic panels on the roof, a complete upgrade to LED lighting, the introduction of intelligent energy management systems and improvements to indoor environmental quality.
Together, these measures reduce the station's environmental impact, improve the efficiency of its facilities and provide a more comfortable, safer and more sustainable environment for passengers and staff.
Touristic Hub
Barcelona Nord Bus Station has established itself as Barcelona's main hub for tourist, private hire and long-distance coach services, contributing to a more organised, safer and more sustainable mobility model.
Its strategic location beside the Arc de Triomf transport interchange provides excellent connections with the Metro, Rodalies commuter rail services, city buses and the cycling network, making it one of the city's principal arrival and departure points for visitors.
The 2026 refurbishment further strengthened this role by bringing all passenger services together on a single level, creating a spacious central concourse, improving access and introducing new facilities for both passengers and coach operators. Concentrating operations within a purpose-built transport hub reduces coach stops on public streets, improves urban mobility and contributes to a better organised public realm.
The station offers modern, accessible and comfortable facilities for both passengers and operators, providing dedicated infrastructure for scheduled coach services, private hire operations and high-volume tourist transport.
