Barcelona City Council has initially approved the executive project to renovate and improve the spaces and services at Barcelona Nord Bus Station. The project, promoted and managed by Barcelona de Serveis Municipals (BSM), will enable a new phase of adaptation of the station to begin, with the aim of continuing to guarantee the best experience for passengers and transport companies.

This project involves concentrating all the station's services on the same floor and establishing a single access for passengers on Carrer Nàpols. These two changes will improve the flow of passengers inside the station, facilitate their stay and reinforce intermodality with a better connection to the metro station and Rodalies Arc de Triomf.

This new phase of work has a budget of 10 million euros, 4.8 million of which come from European Next Generation funds within the Tourism Sustainability Plan Destination Barcelona (PSTDB).

The work is expected to begin at the end of the year and be completed by 2026. While the work is being carried out, the station will remain fully operational.

In this way, Barcelona Nord is continuing the transformation begun in 2021, which enabled some of the tourist excursion lines that were stopping in the station at the time to be relocated to the public road, thus helping to improve mobility in the city.

For the Deputy Mayor and BSM President, Laia Bonet, ‘this new phase in the transformation of the Barcelona Nord Bus Station will provide this station with better services and streamline the user experience, while favouring the interconnection with the Arc de Triomf station’. Bonet recalls that, ‘with more than 2.6 million passengers a year and close to 150,000 departures, Barcelona Nord Bus Station is already the city's main centre for coach departures and arrivals to national and international destinations, and we are working to ensure that it is equipped and offers a service as a first-class mobility hub’.

All the station's services will be located on the ground floor, which will have a single access for passengers.

Structurally, the most significant change in this new phase of the refurbishment of Barcelona Nord Bus Station will be the concentration of all services on the ground floor.

This floor will also be more open-plan to facilitate the movement of people. This will be achieved by opening up new interior passages along the station and configuring new waiting and restaurant areas.

The other major change is that the station will have a single passenger entrance and exit. This will be located on Carrer Nàpols and will optimise passenger flow and improve accessibility and connection with the metro station and Rodalies Arc de Triomf.

The restaurant offer will also be redefined, with new gastronomic proposals adapted to the preferences of users. Specifically, the station will have a varied catering offer that will respond to the different needs of passengers throughout the day, and will be complemented by a gastronomic proposal located on the façade that will open up the station to the city.

All the work planned for the station as a whole will respect the uniqueness of the building, which is listed as a cultural asset of local interest. More modern finishes, new warm and comfortable lighting, vegetation and new elements to improve the sound level of the installation will be incorporated. The passenger information systems will also be adapted to make them more inclusive.

In terms of the environment and in line with BSM's aim to contribute to sustainability and decarbonisation, the station will have a photovoltaic installation to cover part of its energy consumption. This will be located on the roof of the station.
